Apicoectomy Treatment
An Apicoectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a specialized endodontic procedure used to treat persistent infections or inflammation in the tooth’s root after a root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the tip of the tooth's root (the apex) and surrounding infected tissue, followed by sealing the root canal to prevent further infection.
An Apicoectomy is often necessary when:
- A root canal treatment fails to eliminate an infection completely.
- A new infection arises after the initial root canal treatment.
- Complex root structures or missed canal branches are not adequately treated during the initial root canal.
Apicoectomy vs. Root Canal
While a root canal treatment involves cleaning and sealing the entire length of the tooth's root canals from the crown, an apicoectomy specifically addresses issues at the root tip.
A root canal is typically the first line of treatment for an infected or damaged tooth, whereas an apicoectomy is considered when the initial root canal treatment is unsuccessful, or complications arise.
Apicoectomy Recovery
What Can I Expect for Recovery?
Recovery from an apicoectomy is generally straightforward. You may experience mild discomfort and swelling for a few days post-surgery, which can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers.
Most people can return to normal activities within a day or two, although we recommend that you avoid strenuous activities for a few days. Maintaining good oral hygiene and following post-operative care instructions are essential for a smooth recovery.
At Lawley Endodontics, our experienced team is committed to providing thorough and empathetic care to make sure that your apicoectomy treatment is as comfortable and effective as possible.
